Skidding on sensor solutions
Sonic Mixing Corporation constructs skids which are each tailored to specific client needs, featuring between 3 and 10 pumps. These skids utilize pipelines with diameters ranging from 3/4" to 2", through which fluid is pumped and monitored by flow meters. The critical need for accurate pressure monitoring, especially in challenging environments like Class 1 Division 1/2 areas, made finding the right pressure sensors essential yet difficult.
Class 1 Division 1/2 classification requires intrinsically safe equipment, and finding pressure measurement solutions that met these standards was a significant challenge. Many available options were prohibitively expensive. To address these challenges, Sonic Mixing Corporation turned to the pressure measurement experts at VEGA.
Raising the BAR on pressure measurement
After consulting with VEGA, Sonic Corp integrated VEGABAR 38 and 39 pressure sensors into their skids. These sensors were selected for their built-in safety demands, affordability, and advanced features, making them ideal for the company's stringent requirements.
The VEGABAR sensors are mounted in tee-offs within the pipelines to monitor pressure at both the inlet and outlet sides of the pumps. Depending on the number of pumps, each skid features 6 to 20 pressure transmitters. For instance, a skid with 6 pumps would have 12 VEGABAR units—6 on the inlets and 6 on the outlets—ensuring comprehensive monitoring.
In inlet monitoring, the VEGABAR sensors measure suction and detect starvation conditions to prevent drawing a vacuum, which can occur if a valve is left closed or the tank on the inlet side runs dry. This protects the pumps and ensures the process runs smoothly.
On the outlet side, the sensors monitor for clogs in the pipeline that could cause dangerous pressure increases. The sensors' switch points can shut off the system to prevent damage and ensure safety.
